Indigenous Culture Learning
St. Pat’s commitment to Indigenous culture and learning.
We are deeply committed to fostering Indigenous cultural safety and understanding within our school community. Our approach is multifaceted, encompassing land acknowledgment, curriculum integration, and meaningful connections with Indigenous cultures.
Land Acknowledgment — We begin every morning by recognizing the traditional territories on which our school stands, reflecting our respect for the land and its enduring relationship with the people who have stewarded it.
Welcome Totem Pole — A symbol of our commitment, the welcome post stands at the entrance of our school, greeting all with a message of unity and respect, and serving as a daily reminder of our shared responsibility to honour Indigenous history and culture.
Connections — We strive to build strong relationships with local Indigenous communities through guest speakers and collaborative projects, creating opportunities for students to engage directly with Indigenous knowledge keepers and leaders — including the Indigenous painting at the stained glass entrance to the school chapel.
Kairos Blanket Exercise — Each year, our Grade 8 students participate in a blanket workshop, an experiential learning activity that teaches the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples and fosters empathy and a deeper understanding of reconciliation.
Classes and Curriculum Updates — Our educational programs include classes that focus on Indigenous histories, contributions, and contemporary issues, and we regularly update our curriculum to ensure it accurately represents and respects Indigenous perspectives.
