Learning Support
Individualized support for a full range of learning needs.
St. Patrick’s Learning Support Services (LSS) supports learners of all abilities so they may have equitable access to BC’s Curriculum and reach their full potential, while best preparing them for a successful life after high school. We respect and acknowledge neurodiversity in each learner and provide an inclusive, collaborative teaching approach — targeted support for learners with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) primarily within the classroom, where teachers implement specific accommodations and universal designs for learning. Outside of the classroom, we engage families and community resources as partners in the education process. Learning Support Services follows the Ministry of Education criteria regarding special needs, while also adhering to CISVA guidelines.
Our department is made up of two programs. The Adapted Program serves students who have a categorical designation with an IEP: they receive support from an Educational Assistant in subject classes, adaptations within the subject curriculum, and access to an after-school Homework Club that runs four days a week. The Life Skills Program serves students with mild to severe intellectual difficulties, autism, and delayed adaptive behaviour skills, each with an IEP ensuring personalized support and a modified curriculum tailored to their pace.
At the Grade 11 and 12 level, our Work Experience program (4 credits) enables students to learn transferable work skills through a 90-hour placement aligned with their career interests, and our Trades Apprenticeship program (16 credits) gives students hands-on, work-based technical training as part of the ITA Youth Work in Trades program, logging 480 training hours toward a possible $1,000 completion award.
